Mark began his career with Price Waterhouse where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant. At PW, he specialised in financial services and particularly life insurance. He has held a number of senior positions in the financial services industry at Commercial Union, Barclay's, Axa UK plc where he was Chief Executive from 1996 – 2001 and Prudential (UK and Europe) where he was Chief Executive, 2001 - 2005.
Initially backed by Numis, and then £500 million of equity financing from a number of institutions, Mark set up Paternoster, the insurance company launched to take responsibility for the risks associated with companies' final salary/defined benefit pension schemes, in December 2005.
He was Deputy Chairman of the ABI between 1997 and 2000 and has been a Trustee of the NSPCC since 1997, becoming Deputy Chairman in 2000. He is a governor of Amesbury School.
